VECTORNAV TECHNOLOGIES / PRIME-SIDE EARLY-OPPORTUNITY INTELLIGENCE | Research date: October 9, 2026
GPS Source won the Army’s NorthStar APNT prototype. VectorNav has a specific subsystem question worth asking.
Prime/integrator: GPS Source, subsidiary of General Dynamics Mission Systems. Army sponsor: PM PNT. Development: 2026 NorthStar mounted assured-PNT prototype; active three-year prototyping period. Potential fit: VectorNav VN-210/VN-310 inertial sensors, external aiding/fusion interfaces.
The verified program movement
- On April 13, 2026, Army CPE ISW announced two NorthStar OTAs, awarding GPS Source and Integrated Solutions for Systems (IS4S) prototyping work toward MOSA-compliant mounted APNT for Army 2040 platforms.
- On May 5, General Dynamics Mission Systems published its GPS Source award: a $17 million, three-year OTA to prototype, demonstrate and test the NorthStar PNT Hub. The award amount is the entire prototype work, not an estimate of available inertial-sensor spend.
- The published GDMS announcement describes combining multiple PNT sources and integrity/spoofing detection. It is a real sensor-integration problem, but does not identify an open external IMU/INS subcontract.
- VectorNav’s VN-310 offers tactical GNSS/INS, external SAASM/M-Code aiding support and compact packaging; its extended capability material describes accommodating external IMUs. Engineering feasibility is untested in the NorthStar architecture.
The supplier-level opportunity thesis
NorthStar’s modular, upgradeable sensor-fusion architecture raises an identifiable technical question: does GPS Source need an external tactical inertial sensing or reference IMU/INS component for performance comparison, GNSS outage bridging, integration risk reduction, or an alternative form factor? VectorNav should qualify that question before presenting any vendor proposal. GPS Source may already own or have selected its inertial core.
Why VectorNav could matter
- Dynamic inertial data: VN-310 supplies high-rate navigation and IMU outputs; potentially testable as an external source in a modular fusion architecture.
- Rugged and compact choices: manufacturer offers sealed tactical versions and VN-310E low-SWaP embedded modules; selection depends on actual vehicle qualification, environmental and data-interface requirements.
- External-aiding compatibility: manufacturer documents M-Code receiver connection pathways, but an interface does not itself certify GPS Source’s software integration or Army MOSA compliance.
- Program boundary: separate IS4S work continues under the same NorthStar initiative. GPS Source is not the sole awardee.
Specific contact and public route
- George Ott — U.S. Defense Business Development Manager, GPS Source. Public corporate listing in the Institute of Navigation member directory: george.ott@gd-ms.com and telephone 719-248-0998. His direct assignment to NorthStar has not been verified; he is an appropriate publicly identified BD routing contact.
- GPS Source / GDMS NorthStar APNT team: GPSS-APNTSales@gd-ms.com, published specifically at the end of the May 5 NorthStar award notice. This is the best program-specific initial route.
- Formal GDMS supplier qualification: GDMS contact and supplier-information page; request the PNT Hub sensor-fusion architecture/integration technical owner and applicable third-party vendor evaluation procedures. No named NorthStar chief engineer or subsystem owner was verified.
Recommended technical engagement
- Send a focused VN-210/VN-310 component brief: genuine sensor/INS accuracy claims with test conditions, data rates, external-aiding behavior, interface pinouts/protocols, power, mounting, rugged qualifications and a clear statement of what has not been tested with NorthStar.
- Ask the published GPS Source APNT team whether NorthStar Phase 1/2 prototypes accept alternative external inertial devices for comparative evaluation and who owns the sensor-fusion interface.
- Offer a short engineer-to-engineer compatibility review if an unfilled sensor-performance or form-factor requirement exists. Ask whether software wrapper, data synchronization and M-Code handling create integration hurdles.
- Use the GDMS supplier portal only if GPS Source confirms a viable technical path. If all sensor hardware is fixed, identify a potential follow-on increment rather than trying to displace a committed supplier.

Subject: NorthStar PNT Hub — potential tactical INS interface for evaluation
Hello GPS Source APNT team — VectorNav supplies compact tactical IMU/INS and GNSS/INS products, including VN-210/VN-310, with high-rate inertial data and external aiding support. We reviewed your announced NorthStar prototype award. We aren’t assuming an open work package, but would like to determine whether the PNT Hub’s sensor-fusion architecture anticipates external reference or alternate inertial modules. Could you route a short interface and test-data summary to the technical integration owner for qualification?
Questions that could qualify or eliminate this lead
- Is NorthStar’s inertial sensing hardware already specified, internally produced or assigned to suppliers?
- Which sensor/fusion interfaces and data timing conventions permit third-party inputs?
- Would comparative VN-210/VN-310 GNSS-outage and dynamics tests answer a current engineering concern?
- Is an unclassified interface review possible, and what is the proper supplier qualification route?
Risk, evidence confidence and source ledger
High confidence: two prime prototype awards, official GPS Source contact and VectorNav specifications. Moderate: component-level technical proximity to modular sensor fusion. Unknown: available inertial work package, program technical decision maker, required architecture/security, procurement value and timeline. Avoid interpreting the $17 million total award as a component sales opportunity.
